Course outline

  • Clinical pain science. Better understand the why and how patients experience pain. This is focused on conditions of the TMJ/head/face
  • Anatomy review. Simplified so you don't get  overwhelmed with unnecessary details
  • Risk factors, co-morbidities, prognosis
  • Clinical presentations. How to differentiate between articular disc, muscular or neurological involvement. This includes if things like posture, bruxism or dental issues should be considered.
  • Assessment protocols and recognizing red flags.
  • Clinical reasoning process. Learn how to decide on what therapeutic approach is most likely to be effective.
  • Intra-oral and external treatment techniques are demonstrated and practiced. I want RMTs to feel confident and comfortable when treating TMJ and head pain and to have the skills and knowledge of when and how to perform a certain treatment. If someone has a strong gag reflex I show some ways to still be effective while making the patient feel comfortable.
  • Self-management. I will show you how to create a treatment plan that involves coordination, mobilization, resistance/strength and self-massage.

I attended the course not to learn a new technique or modality but to learn a concept, and you taught me to think of pain in a contrasting way. I feel I have better critical thinking skills than I did previously. I also appreciate the amount of science you included in the course. Keep teaching awesome courses!
