Course outline

  • Clinical pain science. This is so therapists can understand the why and how patients experience pain. This is focused primarily on the TMJ/head/face
  • Anatomy review. I keep this brief and to the point, so therapists don’t get overwhelmed with minutiae that isn’t necessary.
  • Risk factors, co-morbidities, prognosis.
  • Clinical presentations. How to differentiate between articular disc, muscular or neurological involvement. This includes if things like posture, bruxism or dental issues should be considered.
  • Assessment protocols and recognizing red flags.
  • The clinical process. How to engage in shared decision making when treating jaw and head pain. This includes a communication framework and deciding on what approach to therapy is likely to be the most effective.
  • Intra-oral and external treatment techniques are demonstrated and practiced. I want RMTs to feel confident and comfortable when treating TMJ and head pain and to have the skills and knowledge of when and how to perform a certain treatment. If someone has a strong gag reflex I show some ways to still be effective while making the patient feel comfortable.
  • Self-management. I will show you how to create a treatment plan that involves coordination, mobilization, resistance/strength and self-massage.
