Learning Objectives

The following are foundational to modern pain education. There is no script for what to say or what to do. However, knowledge of nociceptive mechanisms and pain allows clinicians to make more informed decisions, which ultimately leads to better patient care.

  • Understand the context of pain related to determinants of health and health inequity

  • Evaluate the knowledge gaps in pain education

  • Identify consensus pain terminology, semantics, and meaning

  • Discuss language and logic errors in pain literature and research and how they impact thinking

  • Apply knowledge for clinical descriptors of pain to make a pain assessment for clinical reasoning
