In My Experience, The World is More or Less Flat
Tristen Attenborough MSc MSTA Massage Therapist, UK Cognitive psychology has a lot to tell us about perception, memory, judgement, thinking, and decision-making. More importantly, research into these processes highlight predictable and reliable errors in these systems. This talk includes fun and striking demonstrations that reveal these errors while showing how these affect research, therapists, and clients alike because we’re all just human. Understanding and recognising these errors in the context of the clinical encounter, should nudge us all towards an open-minded humility. About Tristen Since qualifying as a massage therapist in 2014, I have dedicated myself to delivering evidence-informed practice drawing from manual therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and pain research. Having completed a masters degree in pain management in 2020, I am part of a progressive movement within the industry dedicated to improving therapist education, and to align with evidence-based care and best clinical practice. Collaborating with education providers and professional associations, delivering seminars and lectures.

Rewiring Safety: Massage for Nervous System Regulation
Alanna Thompson BKin RMT Massage Therapist, Cochrane, Alberta The state of your nervous system determines everything about your experience of the world. Constant stress decreases our movement quality and cognition, and can influence pain. As massage therapists, we are always engaging the nervous system in our treatments. This hour-long webinar teaches you simple skills to creatively engage with your patients for profound results. You’ll understand how your patient’s nervous systems may be keeping them stuck in the patterns you see over and over. You’ll learn how to change that pattern in your sessions and how to help your patients continue to shift their stress patterns as homecare. The techniques in this session will allow you to confidently work with your patient’s stress levels and stay in scope. About Alanna Alanna is a dedicated RMT, educator, and founder of Salience Education. With a degree in Kinesiology and over a decade of teaching experience, she combines science-based knowledge with hands-on practice to create engaging, and practical courses full of simple skills that lead to profound results. Alanna identifies as a nerd who loves both learning and teaching!
A Closer Look at Dual Relationships in Research and Practice
Sarah MacAulay RMT Massage Therapist, Stewiacke, Nova Scotia Engaging in dual relationships with our clients is generally discouraged in massage therapy because these relationships are believed to hinder clinician objectivity and pose a risk of harm. The common suggestion for dealing with them is to avoid them altogether. Yet, there are many situations where dual relationships will naturally occur, such as in small, rural, culturally distinct, and tight-knit communities. Unfortunately, for those of us working in these spaces, sparse supportive and practical ethical guidance exists for managing them. In this presentation, we will look at how dual relationships are discussed in massage therapy and other areas of health care, and I will speak to my own experience around working in dual relationships in a rural community. This presentation is meant to be informative rather than prescriptive. Participants will leave with a better understanding of where and why dual relationships occur, a greater awareness around the research on dual relationships, and why informed and supportive education and guidance is needed for massage therapists working in communities where dual relationships are a normal occurrence. About Sarah Sarah has been a massage therapist since 2010 and has a home practice in Nova Scotia. She volunteers within her profession as a committee and board member with MTANS. She advocates for, and contributes extensively to, evidence-informed and supportive policy and guideline development. Within her community, she volunteers with the Rising Tides Arts Society as a Board member and visual arts program facilitator.
